How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?  A little over 6 years – I started in December 2014

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area? I have been a runner and biker for many years. At the time I started, the thought of moving into another winter of cold, dark runs was totally unmotivating. I have a friend who had started Crossfit and loved it. She invited me to come check out Summa. I met with Coach Matt and he walked me through my first workout and I have been coming ever since.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?  The free weights and lifting were intimidating to me at first. Prior to Summa my workouts were basically long runs or rides. I had only done a small amount of lifting prior to Summa and it was mostly on nautilus type machines. Not to mention, lifting was pretty humbling. I thought I was in pretty good shape, but quickly found out I was not rather strong. Honestly, it took me a long while to enjoy lifting. But it has become one of the aspects of my fitness I am most proud of. It’s the area where I have seen the most progress and I actually missed lifting when Summa was closed last spring for Covid.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa? These are the same for me…the people. I started coming much like most others for the fitness, but it’s the people that I enjoy the most. I love coming to gym and I am usually get there 5 days a week – the workouts are great but I really enjoy seeing everyone. It’s easy to show up when you enjoy your time there. I look forward to catching up with everyone, hearing about their families and sharing the workouts. It is truly a community and I have made many friends. I also can’t say enough about the coaches. Each and everyone of them, both past and present. They are all special to me given all the help and interest they have had in my progress.

What have you gained since starting at Summa? So my fitness and strength are definitely better than before and I mentioned the great friends and relationships that I have gained. But I would say more so than my fitness, my overall health is much better. As I get older I am less concerned with how much I can lift and or how far I can run when in the gym(all though I still love to track this! ). Rather I’m trying to focus on my overall health. So many of my friends are dealing with a myriad of health issues as we move into our 50’s. I believe my time at Summa helps me avoid most of those. I am much more focused on not only my workouts but my diet, my sleep and my overall health and well being. My time at Summa has directed that change.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise? My least favorite is easy, thrusters! I have a lot of favorites but I do like handstand push ups ( not sure why). I like the hero workouts and tracking my progress over time. The partner workouts are really fun as well. I always push myself more when I have a partner.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa? I have read the hardest part is walking through the front door for the first time. I think that’s true. I think many people are intimidated by Crossfit thinking they are not strong enough or in ‘good enough shape’ to do Crossfit type workouts. That’s not the case. The classes have all age groups and all levels. Rarely is the entire class doing the same exact workout. The workouts are adjusted to meet your needs and are infinitely scalable and easily modified. The Summa coaches can meet you wherever you are.

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?  I am starting my fourth year.

Why did you decide to start? I have always tried to keep fit by running but my son, who is a personal trainer, got me started in boot camp like workouts, which then lead me to CrossFit. After more than 20 years of running my body was not enjoying it anymore. I was not sure if Crossfit would give me the same satisfaction as running so I decided to give it a try. And I was pleasantly surprised!

What made you choose us over any other gym in the area? Summa was recommended to me.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?  Just first time jitters not knowing the people or if I could do the workouts.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  Being with everyone. They are like family.

What surprised you most about Summa? Their constant dedication to their members. They care about each one of us.

What have you gained since starting at Summa? Overall strength! I feel I am in the best shape of my life.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise? Hmm, my favorite workouts are the endurance , chipper like ones. I actually look forward to The Murph! My least favorite is thrusters and man-makers. I cringe when I see them in the WOD.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa? If you want to get in shape, come, no matter what level of fitness you are in or how old you are. The coaches will adapt the workouts for you. It is the best feeling to see yourself improve week after week. I also love the encouragement everyone gives each other. A lot of times it is what gets you through the workout.  It will be the best decision you made.

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I started at CrossFit Summa in December of 2018.

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

My senior season of football had just ended, and I was looking for a new way to get active. I enjoyed working out, but I needed some type of structure to my workouts. I’ve never been able to design my own workouts and I’ve never felt comfortable in a traditional gym, so CrossFit seemed like a good way to have structured workouts and vary my movements.

My Mom and Dad had been going to Summa for a couple months and one night they dragged me with them. I saw the types of workouts that Summa was doing, and I knew it was the right place for me.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

I remember the first time I came to Summa with my Mom. We went to the 6:30 class and I was introduced to a big, sweaty, and shirtless Matt Herman. I saw the kind of shape that he and the other coaches were in and I thought that’s what I had to look like to do CrossFit. I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to do the movements or withstand the cardio. But all the coaches reassured me that workouts could be scaled, and they would work with me to meet my fitness goals.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

I love that I’m able to compete and workout with my Dad. It is great to have someone who can motivate and push you through workouts, even if he cheats his way to beating me.

What surprised me is how quickly, I have grown in CrossFit. When I arrived at Summa, I could barely get 15 calories on the Echo bike without gasping for air halfway through. Now after being here for 2 years, 15 calories are nothing for me. I think that speaks to the quality of the coaching and the programing at Summa.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

Since starting Summa, I have learned to love exercising. Often, my hour at the 8am class is the best part of my day and I look forward to the classes and workouts. Before starting Summa, I used to dread having to run or core work because they those movement were often used as punishments when I played sports. Now I find the hardest works the most fun and rewarding.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

My favorite movements are wall balls, rowing, and any type of heavy lifting, especially power cleans. I also enjoy pullups even if I rip my hands every time. Burpees have started to grow on me, but they still stink whenever Katie programs hundreds of them. But of course, nothing beats chasing the dogs around the gym.

My least favorite workout is DT, and I am always worried that I’ll fall on my face during box jumps.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

There is something for everyone. I know it can be stressful to start but just give it time and you’ll find some workout or movement that is for you. Stick with it and you’ll see yourself becoming happier and healthier in no time. I know I have.

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

About 6 years.

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

I knew some of the trainers from a different gym.  I knew Mike and Matt had started Summa but wasn’t sure if Crossfit was for me.  I was finally persuaded to just try one class.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?  I had a TON of hesitations!  I thought I was too old, not in good enough shape, would embarrass myself, etc….etc….etc.  I made all the excuses.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?

The trainers.  I have had an exercise routine for the past 20 years and Summa, hands down, has the best trainers I have ever worked with.  They work with you where you are as an individual and have helped me attain goals I never thought I’d reach.  I am in better shape now in my late 40’s than I was in my 20’s.  Prior to joining Summa there were so many things I was not able to do - climb a rope, do a pull up, do toes to bar.  I am now able to do all those movements plus so much more.

What surprised you most about Summa?

How supportive of an environment they have created.  Everyone is super supportive not only during workouts but even during tough times any member may experience outside the gym.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

Strength and greater confidence in my abilities as an athlete.  Also new friends, Summa really is an extension of family.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

Favorite exercise - Deadlift

Least favorite exercise - Echo bike

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Give it a try!  Talk to the trainer leading the class about any concerns or goals you have as an individual.  The great thing about Summa and the workouts is everything is scalable and they can meet you wherever you are.  The trainers all have the great ability to figure out what works best for you and how to push you (in the right way) to be your best self.

Tim and Tricia Senigo

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

We have been members since May of 2016

Why did you decide to start?

We had been doing Crossfit since January 2009.

What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

We really like the family atmosphere and just all-around fun time while working out. Also the programming and coaching were big parts of why we decided to choose Summa.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

Yes, Tim had coached for 5 years at another local affiliate, our kids had both grown up going to that gym and it was a big change for us. Those hesitations went away in a very short time thanks to the very welcoming members and coaches. In particular there were some who started playing football with our kids the very first day we were there as if we knew them for years.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?

The people.

What surprised you most about Summa?  The community that is Summa. Also that scaling is ok and encouraged.

What have you gained since starting at CrossFit Summa?

A New Family.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

Burpees. (Tricia’s favorite and Tim’s least)

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

You can do it no matter your current fitness level.  It is completely scalable and achievable. Listen to your coaches and you will have success!

***With the current pandemic we have been working out at home in our garage and can we say we REALLY miss you all and can not wait to be able to get back into the gym!!!***

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I have been a member since September 2019.

Why did you decide to start? What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

I had been teaching group exercise and small group training at another facility and I really enjoyed challenging workouts. I decided to give Summa a try because a friend recommended it to me.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to CrossFit Summa for the first time? Were you intimidated to start?

I was extremely hesitant to start CrossFit. I had seen stories about  CrossFit injuries on television. I did not want to get pushed to do anything that would not be good for my body. I was also concerned about my age.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa? What surprised you most about Summa?

The best part of coming to Summa is the fact that I am working outside of my comfort zone to the extent that I choose. I like that the workouts can be scaled-plenty of options. I was most surprised by the sense of community. Coaches and members cheer you on. It is like being part of a team.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

Since starting Summa I have the confidence to perform exercises I would have never thought I would do.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

My favorite exercise is the devil’s press. My least favorite exercise is the bike.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Try it! You will feel so good when the workout is over.

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I have been a member since November 2019

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

I started my fitness Journey in August 2018. I had made progress with my diet and exercise. However, I wasn't happy with my results. I wanted to improve my overall strength and flexibility as well as my athleticism for tennis. I started my journal at Crossfit Summa with my personal trainer Tyler. He was the first person to introduce me to Crossfit and the Crossfit Summa family. After I started my training with Tyler, my knowledge of exercise physiology, exercise techniques, strength and flexibility improved. Tyler had to move away, unfortunately. However, I found crossfit to be a good fit for my performance goals. Most importantly, crossfitsumma provided the expertise and the non judgement environment, for my continued learning and fitness progress. I am very excited to continue my fitness journey with the Summa family.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

I had no hesitation. I love trying new sporting activities and I am committed to reaching my fitness goals.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

The structured classes and the experienced instructors.

The non judgement space that the Summa team creates, surprised me the most.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

I have seen improvement in my strength, endurance and exercise techniques.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

My favorite exercise is Shuttle runs

My least favorite exercise is Burpees

Kathy Michitsch

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

About 7 months

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

Because my trainer Sean Rimmer left the gym he had previously been working at and started working with CrossFit Summa, and I wanted to continue training with him.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

Yes I wasn’t sure I could do this.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

How friendly and supportive everyone was.

How all the trainers take the time to get to know you as a person.

When I first came and looked around  and didn’t think I could do this at all, so I thought I will just stay one on one with Sean which I will always do. But then I took a class and yes I was scared, but Mike and Katie made sure I was doing everything correctly and modified what I needed. Wow, that was GREAT and I did it and wanted more.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

Getting stronger and more confidence.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

Favorite: Classes

Least Favorite: Bike

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Looks are deceiving. You might not think you can do this but you can, there are some things I cannot do but every trainer can modify for you if you just let them know. The scariest thing is taking the 1st step and then you will be hooked.  I did go to a gym for a long time, but CrossFit is even better.  I am much stronger and cannot wait to see what I can do in a year or two.

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I joined Summa in September 2018.

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

I decided to start attending Summa because I knew I wanted to improve my overall health.  I felt like I was in a rut trying to work out and run on my own.  It just wasn’t happening … I’m sure I am like most people that find it way too easy to make up an excuse to not exercise.

I knew if I really wanted to get healthy and back in shape that I needed to find a gym that offered classes.  After searching on-line, I found Summa’s website and saw that they offered a beginner class.  Summa’s explanation of the classes and workouts helped me find the nerve to finally give it a try.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to CrossFit Summa for the first time?

I think I was like most people and didn’t understand what CrossFit was.  I worried that I wouldn’t be able to do the workouts they offered.  Also, my biggest hesitation was that I felt I needed to be in shape to do the workouts.  I quickly found out that the daily workouts are designed for all levels of people in different phases of their lives…and the workouts are what get you in shape.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

Right now my favorite thing is working out with my son Kieran.   Since Kieran has been staying home from college, we have been able to attend most classes together.  It’s awesome to see how much he enjoys attending Summa every day.  Kieran is learning the importance of balancing work, his college courses and his health by making time each day to attend the workouts.

I look forward to the different workouts that are planned out each day.  The coaches and staff do a great job of teaching each exercise and finding ways to adjust the exercises to fit an individual’s skill level.

I was surprised how much I enjoy competing against myself and seeing if I can improve each time I do a workout.   The variety of classes along with workout partners really help to keep you motivated.

Finally, it doesn’t happen often and I know it won’t last much longer, but it always feels good when I can beat my 20 year old in a work out.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

Simply, I feel better and healthier.  Over the last couple of years, I’ve improved my strength, my flexibility and have definitely improved my cardio fitness.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

I still struggle with my pull ups and double-unders but I know there are always alternatives I can do which allow me to get a great workout.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

I would absolutely encourage someone thinking about starting at Summa to give it a try and stick with it.  My only regret is that I didn’t start sooner.  Not only have I gotten healthier, I’ve made new friends and I look forward to going to the gym every day.

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I've been a member at Summa 6 years.

I always wanted to try CrossFit but was terrified. I moved here and had 2 neighbors working out here.  After 1 day, I was hooked.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to CrossFit Summa for the first time?

I never lifted weights before and knew that was integral part of the program.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

The coaching is by far my favorite thing AND what surprised me the most.  The coaches really take an individualized approach to each member all the while training in a group format.  It's really impressive.

I've gained an incredible fitness level, good friends and a safe place for me to exercise.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

My last favorite is overhead squats.

My favorite is cleans.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

You'll never regret working out at Summa. The workouts are different everyday. It's a great combination of cardio fitness and strength training. And, the coaches keep challenging you to be better than yesterday. I highly recommend Summa to anybody looking to add variety and balance to their workout regimen.

Mike Summersgill

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

1 1/2 years

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

I had been doing Crossfit before

moving to Doylestown. I dropped in at other gyms and settled on Summa for the programming, price and schedule.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to CrossFit Summa for the first time?

I really liked my old gym and was worried it would be hard to replace. I fit right in with the Summa crew and the 8am class said I was replacing a Mike that left. In reality there are like 8 “Mike’s” at Summa.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

I get motivated from looking at the workouts the night before. I’m amazed what a bunch of regular people can do. The coaches challenge us and I think we deliver.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

Friends? (groan). Seriously, we just moved to the area and was a good way to meet people.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

I like overhead squats and hate burpees. Everyone says they hate burpees

but I really mean it. The worst.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Trust your friends and yourself and do it! You won't regret it and will be surprised how quickly it becomes routine.

Jordyn Yanishevsky

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I dabbled here and there at Summa around 8 years ago but I have become a committed member around 9 months ago.

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

I decided to start because I needed to regain control of my life. I had recently lost a lot of weight in an unhealthy way and I wanted to feel strong and build towards my workout goals. I chose Crossfit Summa because no matter how many times I have come in and out of this gym, I have always been welcomed back with open arms. I never felt like the coaches at Summa gave up on me even though I had given up on myself a few times.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

My hesitations were that I was afraid I would be the worst in the class. I worried that I would be judged for not being able to do something or that I wouldn't be good at a certain skill but I was very wrong. Everyone at Summa is so encouraging and always cheering you on no matter your skill level.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

My favorite thing about coming to Summa is the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment, pride, and the support I feel from the coaches and my fellow gymmates. When I leave Summa, I feel like a different person. I feel like I can take on any challenge that life throws my way. What surprised me most about Summa was the amount of self confidence that I have gained over the time I have been there. I used to always doubt myself and never want to try new exercises or heavy weights but now I am so eager to take on a new challenge.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

I have truly gained a sense of self since I have been at Summa. I was so lost before I started this journey. I was unhappy with my body, I had so much anxiety, and I had no goals set for myself. I now hold myself to a very high standard. I know what my body can do and I know what I can accomplish. I have become an overall happier person. I wake up everyday with a smile and a "ready to kill this workout" attitude.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

My favorite exercise is rowing. I absolutely love getting on the rower. I feel so strong with each stroke and I feel myself always improving on the rower. My least favorite exercise would have to be push-ups. I have always struggled with push-ups but I know one day I will be able to master them!

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

My best advice to someone thinking about joining Summa would be "do it". You will not regret it. If I can do it, you can do it. Right before joining Summa, I was at my lowest point. Summa has given me my life back in so many ways. This gym is for everyone. The community is amazing and so supportive. I have made friendships of all ages and all skill levels.  I look forward to seeing the best people everyday. This has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Lauren Charlton

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I have been a member for Crossfit Summa since last November.

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

I decided to try out Crossfit Summa after being a member at another local gym because of Summa’s commitment to safety with COVID protocol first. After staying at the gym over my winter break away from college, it was easy to make the decision to stay with Summa because of the community that truly wants one another to get better—I hadn’t seen such a tight-knit gym in any of the other gyms I have been a member at.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to CrossFit Summa for the first time?

I was nervous making the switch to another gym since I didn’t know anyone really at Summa, but those worries were quickly diminishes as everyone was so welcoming and friendly.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

Summa is a place I look forward to going to every morning. I know as soon as I walk in those doors I will be welcomed with a community that pushes each other to the best version of themselves, and this community is my favorite thing about Summa. It surprised me how a group of people could be competitive and challenging but at the same time so warm and welcoming that created a perfect balance to grow and improve in.

What is your favorite "Summa memory"?

My favorite memory is when Mike Summersgill reached out to my while I was at school and only a member for a few short months to see if I wanted to do a team competition. There was synchro TTB and I was really struggling practicing before hand, and everyone worked so patiently with me, and I am so grateful for that experience. The competition was so much fun with the Summa team, and I am so happy Mike thought to ask me!

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

I have gained so much strength physically and mentally since joining Summa. I have experienced incredible coaching that has taught me effective and proper technique as well as learning how to push myself in a safe way. I have also gained a community that supports one another and encourages healthy living in every aspect.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

Favorite: cleans  Least: Wallballs and Thrusters

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Just start. Summa is one of the most incredible communities I have ever been apart of, even before it being a great gym. It is a great place to learn, grow, and be challenged in an uplifting environment.

Dave Pocalyko

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I joined in 2016, so about 4.5 years.

Why did you decide to start?

I it's a little difficult for me to get motivated sometimes to workourt hard and I like the mix of lifting, gymnastics, etc. offered by CrossFit. Plus, I don't want to have to think up the workouts. :)

What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

The first time I stopped by, I met Mike. He seemed like somebody who was in it for the right reasons. He just seemed like somebody who would be a good coach for me.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

Not really. I'm in it for the exercise and to have some fun. Honestly, for me just finishing a workout can be an accomplishment.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?

Summa is a great environment to workout. Everybody is really supportive and friendly. The coaches always bring great energy and the workouts always vary.

What surprised you most about Summa?

The range of people. We have kids in high school to people as old as me. Soccer moms to people like Missy. Pretty interesting mix. Oh, and the dogs surprised me too. Lots of dogs.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

Strength and flexibility, which kind of surprised me. I can make it to the bottom of a squat now. It took a few years but...

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

Now that I can do a squat, I think that is my current favorite. Burpees on the other hand are the devil's exercise.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Do it. Some people think, I'm not in shape enough to go to CrossFit, or I'm too old for that, or that's way too hard core for me. I would tell them to forget all that. Go, do what you can, and do your best. Before you know it you'll be hooked.

Bob and Sandy Patullo

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

Started December 24th 2018

Why did you decide to start?  Nick asked for his Christmas present to be for Sandy and I to come to Summa and do the 12 Days of Christmas.  So we gave him his present.

What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

Nick, our son, had been to other gyms in the area and liked Summa the best, so we decided to try it, after meeting everyone at the 12 Days of Christmas we understood why he like this gym.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

Bob: Yes, I have not worked out for many many years and was unsure how or if I could do the workouts and how comfortable we would feel.

Sandy: Yes, I wasn't sure if I would be able to do the exercises .  They all looked hard and complex. I had been working out at the Y doing the machines and Nick would send me some of the xfit exercises that I could do in a 15-20min time.  I wasn't always sure if I was doing them correctly but I did feel better for trying to do them.  I also had a left hip replacement so wasn't sure what I would be able to do at xfit. Also I felt my age could be a problem.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?

Bob: The family atmosphere in and out of the gym with the members What surprised you most about Summa? Everyone from the coaches to the members are there to help, support and encourage you throughout your workout. No matter what shape you are in when you come to Summa, you never feel out of place or looked down upon. In fact it is the exact opposite.

Sandy: Agree with Bob.  The family atmosphere in and out of the gym with the members is awesome.

What is your favorite CrossFit Summa memory?

Bob: After recuperating from the 12 days of Christmas, my first real Summa workout that began our journey at Summa for the past almost 3 years, and meeting all the pups

Sandy: Making new friends and attending the crazy parties during the holidays . Attending and cheering on all the coaches and members that competed in xfit competitions. Just knowing that no matter what the Summa Family is always there for you and of course the pups!!!

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

Bob: Since beginning at Summa I have reduced my cholesterol, blood pressure and increased my good blood levels to the point medication is not required. I have more energy and drive then I have had in a very long time. At the age of 65 I never thought I would be able to do a box jump or toes to rings, 2 years ago I just laughed at the thought, now its how many can you do. Another large gain is the friendships and extended family we now have.

Sandy: I now have muscle where I never did before. I can move and lift things that I could never do before. I have more confidence in myself than when I started and will try to do more than when first started. At my age of 65 I never would have imagined I could even lift weights since I never did that in younger years but I can and I feel good after I am done.  I may not always be able to do the same amount as others but it doesn't matter , I do what I can and not only am I proud of what I do but so are all the coaches and other members of Summa.  That is what makes it such a great place to be!

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

Bob: Favorite -- Rowing Least Favorite -- Burpees

Sandy: Favorite is rowing, and I also like planks.  Least favorite is toes to bar.  Not sure if I'll ever get there but I will try working on it.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Bob: If you are looking to get into shape where you are not judged but encouraged to work hard and try your best Summa is the place to be. The instructors will tailor any workout to meet your needs or handicap so you will continue to grow and strengthen every part of your body.

Sandy: Come out and try it, you will not be disappointed. You can do it!!

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?  Why did you decide to start? What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

A little over 6 years ago, my husband, brother & I decided we wanted to focus more on our health.  We had heard of Crossfit & went to visit a couple Crossfit gyms in the area to see what it was all about.  When we walked into Summa we immediately knew it was the place for us.  There was a noticeable sense of community & support between the coaches & members that was very evident & we were excited to give it a try.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

I had never tried Crossfit before & was concerned if I could do it.  I discovered quickly, through the guidance of all of the coaches & support from other members, that Crossfit is for everyone, regardless of age or ability, and there is a scale for everything!

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?

My favorite thing about Summa is the positive community & exceptional coaching.  I am positively encouraged to be the best I can be everyday.  I have learned that if I work hard & stay focused I can achieve more than I thought possible.  Even though I am in a group setting, I feel like I am getting individualized personal training with coaches who listen & care.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

I have gained so much since starting Summa:

-Sense of Community - I am surrounded by like minded health focused individuals who have become great friends in & out of the gym.  There is something about going through a challenging workout together that creates an invaluable bond.

-Personal Growth - I continue to grow & learn what my body & mind are capable of with hard work, focus & positive support.  I know myself better including my strengths & areas of opportunity

-Self Confidence - I have gained confidence in my abilities in the gym & realize that age is truly just a number. This has carried into my life outside of the gym.

-Improved Health - I have an increased knowledge & focus on my overall health including mobility, strength & endurance.  The positive community has also contributed to my overall well-being

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

My most favorite exercises are gymnastics based like toe to rings & handstand push ups.  I also enjoy barbell work especially because it is something I never thought I would be able to do & there is always more to learn.   My least favorite exercises are wall balls & the assault bike!  However, if you know me, I will do them all anyway to the best of my ability.

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

My advice to anyone that is thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa is "What are you waiting for?  You will wish you started sooner!"

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I joined Summa in the middle of December 2017

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

I just got out of a bad relationship. I knew that if I didn’t change something up, I was going to end up in another depressive rut with potentially no way of getting out. A friend suggested I try CrossFit, and that night I started looking at gyms. A few reviews on various places on the internet made me lean towards Summa, I also enjoyed the fact that it was close to the home and to the hospital.

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

Of course! Considering at the time I hadn’t worked out since Jan 2012, was overweight, and my mental health was a bit all over the place at the time. The only thing that made me go was knowing that if I didn’t change something, I was going to have the same results. I had a line from the movie The Matrix stuck in my head, “You know that road. You know exactly where it ends. And I know that's not where you want to be.”

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

Being able to get after it with everyone, there is something incredibly therapeutic about shared suffering.

The biggest thing that has surprised me is how accommodating the owners and coaches are. They have always worked with me through whatever issue I’m dealing with or risk I’m trying to mitigate - like the 6 months I spent working out from home to mitigate potentially getting or spreading covid-19.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

I knew well before I joined Summa that life is all about perspective. After being at Summa, I’ve realized that there are plenty of tough things I will go through, but at some point it will end, and I need to take it one step at a time.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

I’m going to avoid the common ones people hate (assault bike, thrusters, burpees) and go with running.

My favorite movement would be Olympic lifts or the echo bike

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Stop thinking about it and DO IT! Everyone at Summa is welcoming, you will get a killer workout (it will be scaled to your ability), and will learn something about yourself along the way.

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

2.5 years

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

I went to a CrossFit gym before Summa. They were a start-up, so I learned some basics, but they closed. On a whim (I needed a new gym), I visited Summa. My first class hooked me! The coaches took an interest in ME... They addressed me by name, they coached me starting at my own comfort and ability level, and they certainly knew what they were doing. The gym and its members are truly like a family - welcoming, kind, helpful, and positive! I felt that right away!

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

Trying any new gym is intimidating, and when you add "CrossFit" to it, I think that increases the intimidation factor. From the minute I walked in, all those hesitations went away.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?

The people... coaches, members, dogs... the workouts too - it all.

What is your favorite CrossFit Summa memory?

Bill and I going to the end of a CrossFit open workout. We made the time cap

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I started at Summa on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at 10 a.m. Why do I know that? It was the grand opening of the Landisville Road location. I was a total beginner, who couldn't tell a snatch from a clean and jerk but I was here for it all.

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

A friend of mine from high school was a member at Summa and posted about the grand opening event on social media. They were fit and seemed to have fun in photos they'd posted from their time there and so I was curious to give it a try. I'd also seen the CrossFit games on ESPN once and was really impressed by the athleticism on display. I knew it would be hard but I wanted to see what a workout at a gym like that would be like compared to the standard globo gyms in the area. I wanted to get in better shape and decided to give it a chance. The event was free and beginners were welcome and encouraged  to come, so what did I have to lose? Plus it sounded fun!

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

As a total beginner, I didn't want to embarass myself too much but I knew I'd have to go into my first few classes with more than a smidge of humility. I also didn't want to injure myself by going too heavy on weight too quickly. I had to remember it was OK not to know how to do everything and even look silly at times learning different movements. I'd have to trust the coaches there to help me and practice until I got better and stronger.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

I've met some of my closest friends by coming to Summa. The community there is very special. It's filled with friendly, hard-working people, who are all striving to be "better than yesterday." As a competitive person, what keeps me coming back when my body is feeling tired and sore, or it's too cold and dark outside to want to leave the house, is the drive I feel to push myself past my limits at the gym because I know the people there around me are all doing the same. I was surprised by the way workouts are programmed. There's intentional variety from day to day or week to week, so it never feels boring. Likewise the breadth and depth of the knowledge of the coaches on staff makes you feel like you're in good hands when you walk in the door.

What is your favorite CrossFit Summa memory?

Hard to choose just one. Everytime I PR a one rep max barbell lift leaves me feeling especially great.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

In addition to overall strength, I've gained a lot of knowledge about the importance of mobility, technique, nutrition, and how the body generates power. I didn't know how to perform Olympic powerlifting movements or what metabolic conditioning meant, when I started at Summa. I came in wanting to do one strict pull up and develop my arms and chest. Today I can do several strict pull ups but now I want to increase my mobility in my ankles and shoulders, in order to lift heavier weights and become a better overall athlete.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

Favorite: Strongman Saturdays-Sandbag cleans, sled pulls, tire flips and beating the hell out of a tire with a sledgehammer.

Least favorite: Burpees

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Don't forget to bring a water bottle! Honestly though, it's a great experience and I'd highly recommend giving it a try. You'll learn a lot, have fun and make friends in the process. What more could you want?

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Summa?

I have been a member of Summa since January of 2017, so over 5 years at this point!

Why did you decide to start?  What made you choose us over any other gym in the area?

Back in 2017, I was not in great shape, and I knew that I had to make some sort of change; however, the idea of fitness and health was wholly elusive to me. The only ideas that I could picture were of the “typical” gym, i.e., the treadmills and weight machines. Something about that did not appeal to me. The mindless repetition, the lack of guided direction, and the generally aloof reputations that ”other gyms” held made the idea of fitness rather unattractive. It was my mom who introduced me to Summa. Being a CrossFitter for years prior, she had experience with CrossFit, and had moved between gyms in search of a better experience, and ultimately settled on Summa. She brought me to a seminar designed to introduce new people into the realm of CrossFit. Now, this was five years ago, so I remember very little

of the session; however, what I do recall is that I wanted to go back for more. Soon enough, I was hooked. That’s an understatement. “Addicted” might be a better word!

Did you have any hesitations before you came to Crossfit Summa for the first time?

It would be false to assume that I had no hesitations of any sort. Most people are hesitant to try anything new. That is natural. However, we cannot make judgments without experiencing it first.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Summa?  What surprised you most about Summa?

My favorite thing about coming to Summa is that for a moment, the outside world simply vanishes.  Outside of the gym, I face a multitude of stresses like most people. However, once I walk through those doors, all that stress disappears from my mind. For once in my day, I can relax (in some strange masochistic way). I think the most surprising aspect was the sense of community. Like I said before, it feels as though “other gyms” are generally aloof and reserved. The warm atmosphere that Summa continues to maintain was a welcome surprise. There are always friendly faces happy to see me, and that instills a sense of belonging keeps me returning.

What is your favorite CrossFit Summa memory?

I have a few, but one that I like is getting double-unders for the first time. I distinctly remember going outside after school and practicing before heading to the gym. I did this nearly every day, and soon enough, the toils were fruitful. The thought of achieving something, just one skill that the “pros” had was invigorating. Looking back at all the progress that I made is something that keeps me moving; additionally, it is a reminder that these skills take time to develop! Nothing happens overnight, and I am excited to work towards new goals.

What have you gained since starting at Summa?

I have gained a healthy way to manage my stress. Our lives are messy and littered with all sorts of stresses and being able to clear your mind for just a moment is absolutely refreshing. Inside the gym is a completely different world, with a community that cheers you on and makes you feel welcomed. It is such a wonderful feeling and I relish the time that I am at the gym.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

I know that I might appear a bit conceited with how I am on the Echo bike, but I find it satisfying and challenging! The bike is fun!

My least favorite movement is wall-balls. They are the bane of my existence :( (Thrusters are a close second, though)

What is your advice to someone thinking about starting at CrossFit Summa?

Like I said earlier, and what others had said before me, the hardest part is taking that first step.  However, that first step is arguably the most important. Whatever your goals may be, they are only attainable if you make the move. Likewise, it is important to recognize that change does not happen overnight. It requires effort, lots of effort. Start making those changes, however small they may be. Make manageable, maintainable changes. Just be patient, especially with yourself. This is a bit ironic coming from someone as impatient as myself, but these words have truth to them. Most people have no desire to become one of those ostentatious “fire breathers” who we see littered over social media, and that is perfectly fine. Summa recognizes this; their approach to fitness is to cater to everyone, regardless of your current fitness level and abilities. There is always a feasible option available.
